I tried to explain in the Overview why we wanted to do it, now we just had to do it.
We started our initial plans on the project in June.  Actionable items included:

  • Search Ebay and the Internet for a decent vehicle that we can afford.

OR

  • Search Ebay for a great vehicle that we will have to take a loan for.
  • Research if this type of vehicle has been done before, and if so, learn from those*.
  • Keep asking each other "Are we crazy?", and "What the hell are we doing"
  • Search the internet community to see if anyone could give me a good reason why someone could not build something like this.
  • Attempt to contact my WVO mentor Chris Goodwin, at Frybrid in Seattle, and see if he will sell me some of his top quality components if he can guaranty they will  work on a 11 liter, $50,000 bus engine.

I posted my first public question to the Frybrid forum on June 14th....

* My research indicated that while there have been several hippies and college students whom have converted old school busses to run on WVO and driven cross country, my research could not find any evidence of a family ever doing this trip, nor anyone having converted a luxury motor home, nor any such a expensive, large and sensitive engine as the 11 liter engine, Additionally, I found now evidence of anyone who went cross country on WVo that did not have many fuel related breakdown, or built a system that ACTUALLY worked, and successfully made the trip 100% without debilitating mechanical failure.  What's more, I could not find anyone who had successfully employed a Mobil filtration and dewatering system -capable of gathering and cleaning waste oil in real time, while driving. The ability to gather fuel "on-the-fly" would be a required component for my vision of the "Freedom Machine"
