We did not contact the press at all during our trip.  The reason was multi fold:

  •  We were not certain we would all make it back alive
  • We had no clue where we were or where we were going to next
  • We were completely busy every minute of every day just living.  We had no way to really think about it.
  • and most importantly, this trip was for us and about us.  It was personal.
     

It was not until we got back that everyone here made a big deal of it, and convinced me to make this web site, and post it to the web - get media coverage, etc. .

Heck, I am unemployed, so I guess any media is good media??
