The Fat Of America

Day 58

Back Up Next

-         Bratkartoffel for breakfast. I made them from the left over Pellkartoffeln I made last night. We had freshly picked green beans (by us!) and freshly dug up fingerling potatoes (also by us!) from the farm stand near Seattle. Julia and Jonah helped snip the ends off the beans and ate a ton of them…

-         We landed in Merritt, a funny little town with a sweet little nothing of a center. It’s surrounded by mountains on all sides, fields to their feet. A white mist is hanging over the land. It looks quite dreamy but is actually white smoke that’s drifted over from a southern wild fire. We’ve been told that some of the roads to the south might be closed off due to the fire, but I can’t seem to find any info on the internet in the two seconds I have on in before it either crashes or Steve shoes me away. All I have read so far is about a fire on the border to Washington State. Could that be it?

-         We unsuccessfully drive around a bit to find some suction hose to replace the one that collapsed when we put hot oil through it…

-         The plan now is to go down south to Okanagan Valley. The wine and fruit center is Kelowna and that’s where we are headed. It looks to be very beautiful in my guide book, we’ll see.

-         As we are driving the smoke is getting thicker, like fog creeping in. It smells of burning wood now. I am wondering about the roads with this smoke getting so much thicker.

-         We are going up another mountain, the tallest one so far at 1995m, and the engine “is frying up” as Steven says.

-         Well, the smoke never did get worse. It lifted for the most part leaving only a bit of haze over Okanagan Valley.

-         We found a hose at a hot tub place (the girl behind the counter didn’t even know what it was called). New hose onboard we drive to City Beach in Kelowna so the kids can play while Steve put it in. I found a Water-splash park/playground/beach near Okanagan Lake. It’s so amazing! It’s a very elaborate water splash playground, completely free! That really tops it all. I liked the wading pools in Seattle but this is just too much! What’s even cooler is that today is pretty much the last day that it’s open! We just caught it before it closes until next summer! We go lucky! Nice!
