The Fat Of America

August 16th, 2006
Location: Seattle, WA
Day 35

Back Up Next

-         We have found what is supposed to be Seattle’s biggest playground. It’s an expansive space build on an old naval base. It’s very quiet here right on Lake Washington, although you can’t see it from the playground itself. It’s very pleasant with a community garden and a Kayak rental place down the road. There is a beach somewhere too. Lots of grass and covered picnic tables. They do that around here, they cover their picnic areas…

-         The most amazing thing about this park though are the blackberries! Many, many bushes line the outer edge of the park, they are absolutely delicious!! We all went over to gather some, Juju was hooked and went back by herself with a bucket…turning out to be a master picker…Steve can’t help himself and it just snarfing them down by the handful. I am afraid what his belly will say about that…

-         The word is that today might be the big day for the conversion…Chris is working frantically to get this project put to bed…is it finally really happening? On Monday he sat on the couch, looked me in eye and said: “I think by the end of the week you’ll be out of here” I couldn’t believe it (and don’t). They bolted the tank in yesterday and poor Forest hit his head when the bay door came loose and slammed down on him…he stumbled for a bit and seemed a little out of it, although that’s not an easy call to make with this guy…I ran for ice which, of course, we don’t have, and grabbed a bag of frozen Brussel sprouts…

-         Our grateful Bread

-         View  Ridge park wading pool

-         We meet Stefanie at a playground near their house in the pm for the kids to play. I love the wading pools everywhere. Every hour or so the kids have to get out in order for the park attendant to put chemicals into the water. It’s so wonderful not to have to go in the water with them without worrying. Seattle is so much more community friendly than anything we have back east. All of the west seems a little more civic minded than we. I don’t know why this is but it feels more self oriented in the east.

-         At night we parked across another park across from Chris’ and Stef’s house and went over to play. Stefanie bought a pizza and the kids played and ate and watched Willi Wonka. Chris made an amazing dinner with spaghetti and sauce, roasted vegetables from the grill, shrimp, fresh garlic bread, some kind of cactus…he used to live in Mexico. Stefanie proclaimed that “she is a good egg” referring to me. J The house is simple and pleasant. Chris has made a lot of toys himself. They say that for every toy she is given, he tries to make one. He made these beautiful hanging mobile, fairly big stars, moon etc. He really has an artist’s soul…everything he does, he does with such perfection…

-         It was nearly 12 midnight by the time we went ”home.” They walk us across the park to the bus and Stefanie had a little peek at Elbee.

-         In the morning Chris came over for a cup of coffee, he used to be a barista, had the second coffee bar in town, he says.

-         I found German pretzels at the PCC across from where we are parked, what a great store!!!

We learned that we could "Boondock" for several days, before we needed to Dump the old and take on the new water.  About 20 minutes North of Seattle is a rest area that has a dump station and a fresh water fillup.

The red button turns the hose on for 40 seconds.  The water tank is 108 gallons... maybe more? It takes forever to sit there and keep pressing the frickin' button...

Trained my 6 year old to push the red button.
Now everyone wants to push the red button.
Except Lilly, of course, who prefers her air conditioned, master bedroom.
