The Fat Of America

July 13th, 2006
Location: Providence RI - Junction City OR
Day 1

Up Next

-         We just made the flight, rush-hour traffic almost put an end to us

-         At the gate we find out that the flight is delayed, phew

-         At our stopover in Chicago it seems we have another delay and so we stroll off to find some food for the sputniks. Everybody is tired but excited and people are hopping around like bouncy balls. At some point Steve takes them on a little train ride to the next

-         Arrived at Ramada-Inn at around 1:30 AM local time, of course that is 3:30 EST. The kids are jumping on the beds giddy with sleep. The shower feels good. Of course, we wake up too early; our bodies haven’t quite arrived yet. I stall getting up b/c I don’t want to wake the children but we are up around 7:00 AM anyhow. When we call to find out about breakfast it is OVER already. They serve it from 4-7…we end up at a little place nearby, where the wife of the owner brings out a big plate of fruit for the chillens…so sweet

-         Of course Steve’s phone is dead. So we have to use mine to talk to Odessa.

-         Both of us are very nervous. Steve is apprehensive about the details, I keep telling him “don’t worry, we’ll work it out, Just don’t worry about. I am apprehensive about spending all that money, he keeps telling me “don’t worry, we can afford it”. So between the two of us we’ll work it out.

-         We drive out from Portland to Junction City. Doesn’t that sound like a Gold Rush town?

-         Beautiful ride along the Cascade Mt. Range/Mt Hood. Very flat with peaks jutting just a few hundred yards away. We cannot believe the plethora of RVs around here, it’s absolutely mind boggling. We take 205 to 5 to 99E. Off the Highway we stop somewhere for a bathroom brake. Next door to the gas station is a tiny little Espresso hut like they have them in Seattle. It’s amazing. A bald guy is serving specialty coffee and Italian ice.

-         Then we get lost.

-         We backtrack and cross the little Muddy Creek in Harrisburg. There are fields and fields and fields of grass…the grass seed capitol of the country!!!

Here is Jonah, 3, on hearing that we just bought 5 ONE WAY tickets to the west coast.
